An animal model of cerebral infarction. Homologous blood clot emboli in rats.

چکیده
An experimental model of cerebral infarction is created in rats by intracarotid injection of their homologous blood clots. This is the first small animal model in which embolization was achieved by homologous blood clots. The infarcts were produced predominantly in the territory of the middle cerebral artery. The low mortality rate and excellent reproduction rate make possible the correlative study of morphological, biochemical, and metabolic parameters at selected points in time to reconstruct the pathogenesis and natural history of focal cerebral ischemia and its relation to blood elements.

Cerebral infarction in rats using homologous blood emboli: development of a new experimental model.
A reproducible model of thromboembolism in the rat was developed and the temporal relationship between hydrogen clearance, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and power spectral-analyzed electroencephalographic (EEG) activity explored for up to four hours postinsult. Sixteen rats were subjected to right internal carotid artery homologous blood embolization after electrocautery of the pterygopal...
متن کاملNew method of embolus preparation for standardized embolic stroke in rabbits.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although thromboembolic stroke is caused by red, white, or mixed clots, the emboli previously used in animal studies on thrombolysis were more often red than white. Because this might be one of the reasons why thrombolysis is less effective in patients than in experimental stroke, we developed a new method of preparing highly standardized red and fibrin-rich white emboli....
متن کاملCarthamus tinctorius L. ameliorates brain injury followed by cerebral ischemia-reperfusion in rats by antioxidative and anti-inflammatory mechanisms
Objective(s): Carthamus tinctorius L. (CT) or saffloweris widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. This study investigated the effects of CT extract (CTE) on ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) brain injury and elucidated the underlying mechanism. Materials and Methods: The I/R model was conducted by occlusion of both common carotid arteries and right middle cerebral artery for 90 min followed by 24...
متن کاملCandesartan Attenuates Ischemic Brain Edema and Protects the Blood–Brain Barrier Integrity from Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats
Background: Angiotensin II (Ang II) has an important role on cerebral microcirculation however, its direct roles in terms of ischemic brain edema need to be clarified. This study evaluated the role of central Ang II by using candesartan, as an AT1 receptor blocker, in the brain edema formation and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injuries in rat. Methods...
متن کاملComputerized detection of cerebral emboli and discrimination from artifact using Doppler ultrasound.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Transcranial Doppler ultrasound can detect circulating cerebral emboli. Monitoring of patients with potential embolic sources may allow identification of high-risk patients who can then be selected for prophylactic treatment. However, practical patient monitoring will require automated programs that can detect emboli and differentiate them from artifact. METHODS A new o...
